This is the first Korean film I've ever watched and it set the bar quite high. As someone who has a few family members on the autism spectrum, I think this film handled the delicate subject tastefully and politely. In the end, it leaves you with much to think about yet real-world advice to help. Yet it gives you so many miny victories throughout, signs of progress and deeper understanding that you never feel so guilty you have to turn the movie off.
This is a movie about overcoming prejudice, prejudice you might not even be aware you have. It's the journey you go on with the main character, Soon-ho.
But the reason I would implore you to watch this movie isn't the actors, story arcs, music nor cinematography. It utilized the long runtime well with all the main characters being fleshed out nicely and having very fulfilling character arcs! The wrap-up at the end of this movie was one of the nicest I'd seen in quite some time. For a movie that's 2hr and 9mins long, the pacing was quite nice with some areas a little waning but always holding enough action to keep you hooked. This movie is engaging from the get-go, barely giving you enough time to breathe before the inciting accident takes place, starting the whirlwind that is this movie. Now that we've got that out of the way, onto the actual review. A note of finality on this subject, the movie is categorized as "Crime, Drama" and that's exactly what it is. If you came here looking to watch a relationship blossom between an older gentleman and young girl. Personal Rating: 7/10 (worth watching) Looking at the other reviews for this film I feel like I need to address something right off the bat, this is not a romantic movie. But it is without a doubt a recommendable film, in which the suspense and tension is maintained up until the last minute. I will not ruin the suspense by revealing which one prevails in the end. While getting deeper into the case, the lawyer was stuck between professionalism of a lawyer and morality of a human being.
What he did not expect is that the clue are to lead him to a direction opposite to his original conviction. For convincing the jury about the truth and getting to the bottom of the mysterious case, the lawyer decided to make acquaintance with the kid and hopefully excavate more clues. Nevertheless, the only witness, a 14-year-old girl with autism offered her testimony that the case was a murder instead of suicide. Judging from his conversation with the maid, he was convicted that she was innocent. An old man was killed with a plastic bag over his head, the suspect being the maid who has served him for over a decade. Thank you to the Korean Cultural Centre Australia for allowing Officially Kmusic to review this movie.A special case came to the desk of a 46-year-old lawyer who was living with his father. ‘ Innocent Witness‘ was similar to ‘ The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale‘ because both films showed what it meant to be human. She was so talented in this movie and did her role justice. Her ability to depict an autistic character so accurately is simply amazing for someone as young as her. As someone who is currently watching her on the small screen in ‘ Moment of 18‘, it was hard to wrap my head around the fact that she was portraying a totally different character here. Kim Hyang-gi‘s portrayal of Ji-woo deserves a standing ovation. Their unlikely friendship was truly beautiful. This was a heartwarming moment to watch and brought tears to my eyes. When he chooses to do the right thing as a human being over keeping his job, he finally shows Ji-woo that he understands her and the circumstances that she is in.

The bond that develops between the lawyer and Ji-woo is fascinating to watch. The lawyer has to learn how to work and cooperate with her before she takes the witness’ stand on trial. Ji-woo, the girl portrayed by Kim Hyang-gi (who is currently starring in ‘ Moment of 18‘ opposite former Wanna One member Ong Seong-wu), is the witness of an old man’s death. It tells the story of a lawyer and high school girl with autism, who cross paths in a murder case. ‘ Innocent Witness‘ was the second film shown at KOFFIA 2019.Īlthough there are a few funny parts in ‘ Innocent Witness‘, the film is heavy and will likely make you tear up.
